Over 150,000 people in the UK have died from Covid-19, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The ONS said that 151,313 deaths have now occurred in the UK where Covid was mentioned on the death certificate, with the highest number of deaths to occur on a single day being 1,472 on 19 January. However, figures also show that the number of registered deaths involving Covid in England and Wales has fallen to the lowest level in six months, with 400 deaths registered in the week ending 2 April 2021 where Covid was mentioned on the death certificate. This is the lowest number since the week ending 2 October 2020 and is down 44 per cent on the previous seven days. The ONS said that the number of registrations was affected by the Good Friday Bank Holiday, which took place on 2 April. The number of registered care home resident deaths involving coronavirus also dropped below 100 for the first time since the week ending 15 October, with 86 care home resident deaths involving Covid registered in England and Wales in the week to 2 April, which was down 43 per cent on the previous week. In total, 42,189 care home residents in England and Wales have now had Covid recorded on their death certificate since the pandemic began last year. However, the ONS figures cover deaths of care home residents in all settings, not just in care homes. Covid deaths have fallen from second wave peak The ONS figures also show that deaths involving Covid have fallen by 94 per cent since the peak of the second wave. According to figures, 532 deaths involving coronavirus occurred in the week ending 26 March 26, which was down from 8,948 deaths in the week ending 22 January. The ONS also said that the overall number of registered deaths was below the five-year average for the fourth consecutive week, with 8,201 deaths registered in the week to 2 April, which is 19 per cent below the average for the same period in 2015-19.
